This is a good book that recovers the tradition Marxist concept of ideology. https://www.marxists.org/archive/mccarney/1980/ideology/index.htm

Thank you for sharing this, which challenges other interpretations I've been drawing from, specifically Jorge Larrain's "The Concept of Ideology" and "Marxism and Ideology."

I finished the Larrain books. His restricted and negative understanding of ideology seems closer to Marx’s. Thanks for turning me on to these.

Interesting. I’ll have to track down the books by Larrain. Based on a brief review of Larrain, it appears that both he and McCarney emphasize that for Marx and Engels ideology had a negative connotation. Ideology as forms of thought that serve ruling class interests by concealing or inverting real social contradictions. Looking forward to your take.

Just came across this short piece where McCarney mentions Larrain. https://www.marxists.org/archive/mccarney/2005/false-consciousness.htm
